Exceptional Service. The other night my wife, and another couple decided to eat out at Not your average Joe's. I wasn't sure, It wasn't my pick although the ladies get what they want. We were seated and greeted by our server "Ella" she was very courteous and knowledgeable. Our food was relatively quick and any time we needed anything she was right on top of it. Everything was very pleasant, the food was exceptional and our drinks were perfect. Overall it was a real nice experience, we will be coming back, Thanks
Bland, boring, and uninspired.
We live nearby, and have been exploring Newburyport's restaurant scene. We decided to try Joe's one evening, and initially were excited. There are lots of interesting sounding dishes on the menu. Then reality set in as I saw a nearby family's main courses taken back for re-preparation because they weren't satisfactory.
One dish's beef tips were well prepared, but the accompanying green beans were barely cooked (almost raw) and very tough. The other vegetable (zucchini & squash) had been lightly sauteed and was almost flavorless.
My chicken was cooked well, but the highly vaunted (and recommended) cranberry-teriyaki glazesauce had no flavor. What cranberry? I couldn't taste it! It was served with mushy , almost flavorless sweet potato cannellonis beneath which lay a bed of flavorless spinach.
I mentioned the problems to the waiter, who cleared our main course and dropped off the check without asking if we wanted either dessert or coffee. Sorry, but if this is how this place treats its food (and customers) we won't go back.
This place advertises itself as "not average" but is not living up to this claim. Maybe they were having a bad night, but I really doubt that.
The Best Pizza. The pizza here is not your average pizza. If you want to taste to great italian pizza, this restaurant is where you want to go. Generous portion and well cooked. The staff was really pleasant and very accomodating. I did not find them slow at all. The wait wasn't too long, pretty much the same standard as other establishments. Not to mention, the scenery is beautiful especially in the summer. I really enjoyed my dinner here and would recommend this eatery. I will definitely go back again for my pizza cravings!
Love the bread!. Every once in a while its nice to have a menu change! BUT other than that, this place is cool, literally, its always cold in there. The waitstaff are usually very nice. Sometimes slow but nice. The menu has been the same for years but it always taste good! Great for the whole family! Definately make reservations if you can...
The bread and dipping Sauce!!!!!!!. I guess every meal in a US Italian restaurant starts with bread and their is a pleasant foreshadowing of what is to come. Their meals are fair priced and great quality.
Good but not gourmet. I was also surprised by the negative review. NYAJ's is a great place to drop in and get a good variety of food...all prepared well and cooked they way you ask for it. Steak tips are great as are the salads and pizzas. Service is fast and polite. Diners move along and they give you beepers so you can cruise Nbpt while waiting for a table. Bread and dipping oil/cheese is delightful!
User review by backslapper. Wow. I was very surprised at the negative rating the other person wrote. I have eaten at every restaurant in Newburyport (I live here) and think Not Your Average Joe's is terrific. Huge menu, fabulous food, terrific service (fast and nice waitstaff), reasonably priced. Many Italian entries, great hamburgers, etc. Wonderful view of the water in the back room. Outdoor tables in season--one in back with the view, one in front very European feeling. I have NEVER gotten food I didn't like and I'm picky! Newburyport has a zillions of restaurants and this is just one of the best. (try their Gorgonzola salad) And no, this is not a paid announcement! I am a real person, not affiliated with the restaurant in any way!
Not very good. I was very dissapointed in the service and the food there. I have given Joe's a fair shot I have eaten there several times and its the same every time. My food is often cold, the waitstaff is not trained to be polite, when the food does come its doesn't taste right. I have tried to give it a fair shot but I will not go there anymore.
With a lengthy menu of dependable comfort food and inventive pizzas, there's nothing average about this popular area chain..
The Scene
Each Joe's location handles a steady flow of hungry families and casual couples tired of national chains' bland cuisine and soulless atmospheres. While most nights bring standing-room crowds, waiting for a table can be avoided by sitting at the bar (the better to sample from a surprisingly varied, yet affordable, wine list). Servers, while kept in constant motion by the hungry masses, manage to keep baskets of spongy focaccia filled.
The Food
While most diners come for the eclectic, stone hearth oven-baked pizzas (shrimp and artichoke, spicy "voodoo" chicken), it's a mistake to ignore the rest of the varied menu. Start with a freshly-made cobb salad; full of grilled chicken, applewood-smoked bacon, and avocado, the heaping plate is large enough for three diners. Entrees consist of casual (savory Black Angus meatloaf) and contemporary (Mediterranean salmon with balsamic tomato-caper relish) options. Mammoth desserts include kid-approved favorites like strawberry shortcake.
