A Taste of South Africa in Central Virginia.
Specializing in Cape Cuisine (a blend of Dutch, German, Malay and French flavoring), the Shebeen is an enjoyable departure from Charlottesville ordinary, and is far nicer inside than traditional
shebeens you'd find in Soweto. Expect lamb, beef and seafood dishes which include bobotie (a curried meat dish covered in an egg custard, sort of a cross between meatloaf and shepherd's pie - pronounced more like "ber-ber'-tee), samosas (deep-fried pastries filled with meats and/or vegetables) and homemade boerwors (farmers' sausages). South Africans love their "braai vleis" (grilled meats, including game) but these selections at the Shebeen are quite limited (warthog and impala just aren't prevalent on McIntire Rd.) A selection of better-than-you-expected South African wines is available, too.
Service is casual but adequate. Bar traffic becomes younger and more predominant as the evening progresses. Patio dining is available during warmer months. Expect appetizers approx. $5 - $13, Entrees $9 - $18.…
