The Scene
Exceptionally stylish for a Thai restaurant, Sugar & Spice caters to the bookish couples and graduate students who call Porter Square home. With curved, multi-colored walls, eye-catching lighting fixtures and an eclectic, international soundtrack, the dining area offers a modernist setting in which to enjoy a sprawling menu of Thai treats. Quiet, black-clad servers keep busy delivering extra dishes of tangy sweet-and-sour sauce or refilling water glasses.
The Food
The laminated, double-sided menu provides lovers of Thai cuisine with several tough choices. Classic items, including soft summer rolls (boiled shrimp and steamed tofu peeking through a clear rice wrap) and coconut-heavy curries, share tabletops with modern dishes like spicy steamed cod (disciplined palates notice a hint of lime) and a piquant jumble of fresh vegetables and chicken served in a crisp wonton shell (aka "Excited Chicken"). Quality is high across the board, and portions are rather generous.

My wife and I decided today (01/18/2009) to eat Thai food and unfortunately picked this place based on the reviews on this website. The young woman at the reception neither made eye contact nor welcomed us. She picked up a pair of menus and randomly picked a table for us (without even asking for our preference in a restaurant that was half empty). Much to my surprise she then literally threw the menus on the table and without saying a word walked away. We have eaten at multiple restaurants in Cambridge and have never been treated so badly. I have no explanation for this young woman's rudeness. But suffice it to say we opted not to eat there and walked out of the restaurant immediately. Others beware........ prepare to be insulted if you want to eat here !!

Let me be completely honest; I usually love Sugar and Spice, but today's experience was so bad I just have to write about it to get it out of my system. Vegetarian Pad Thai...sounds simple, huh? Well, what a plateful of tasteless greasy glop! I couldn not eat it and am now at home making lunch. I'm not going to go on and on about it, just let me make one thing clear; if this is the level to which Sugar and Spice has sunk during my time away, it will be coming off of my list of favorite/regularly frequented restaurants. MAJOR disappointment today!

Same owner as the recently renovated Spice & Rice (formerly Sweet Chili) in Inman Square (Cambridge), but I would say the food at this Porter Sq location is inferior and staff a bit amateur (although friendly). The sticky rice was unacceptable - dry and fell apart when picked up, but the bbq beef was acceptable. What was actually very good was the dessert - fried ice cream (green tea flavor). This is a staple dessert with Japanese restaurants (and increasingly, Thai, it seems), so it's good to ask if it's homemade. An ok place if you're not too critical (or don't know Thai food too well). Casual atmosphere, seemed family friendly.
