Watered Down Drinks
by Ruckos at Citysearch
I have never given a bad review in my life until now. We already know the food there is awful. But last night was a new low. I was told from a former employee that they put generic vodka in their top shelf bottles, but i thought that was a jilted former employee. My martini last night was 90% water. It was so bad I couldn't even fake drink it. We left the drink and the bar. This place needs to go. As one of the four places in downtown Melrose, its a shame and a waste of space. Don't get duped, don't bother going there. I would give this no stars if possible.

AVOID IT! Obnoxious OWNER rude and RAW STEAK - twice!

I wish there was a zero star rating just to get the point across - AVOID THIS PLACE FOR FOOD! This is the truth: My order was for a $18.99 dinner: Medium rare filet prepared with boursin cheese, vinegrette and and side veg of butternut squash. What was delivered by RUDE, chatty owner: Filet that was NOT cooked at all, with side of brocolli and onions. Forget that the side and toppings were wrong or missing. He argued that this red, raw filet that was too raw to cut through (it was red on the outside with white veins) was actually cooked medium rare according to him. He must be blind. Kept calling me and everyone else honey, sweetie and insisted that it was cooked, if not so shocked I would have insisted HE eat it in front of us, and let him go to Melrose Hospital. He took the plate away and retunred no longer than 2 minutes later with the same dish, that had the raw meat on it, and it was my same, raw meat cooked for 2 more minutes. Cleary not enough time! What is he thinking, are they high at this place? This place needs to be inspected. AVOID it - you will be sorry if you order food. Perhaps drinks are fine but frankly after serving raw meat on same plate twice, I'm not sure about anything they would serve, liquid or otehrwise.

Horrifying experience

We may be calling the board of health on this place. The sign on the host podium read "Please wait to be seated" but nobody greeted us so we seated ourselves. We were attended to immediately by a bartender/server. We ordered a tomato/basil mozzarella appetizer which turned out to be tomato/iceberg lettuce/mozzarella. I ordered a steak tip/clamcake dish with butternut squash but received an overcooked, soggy zucchini/summer squash mix. The steak tips were decent but the crabcakes were also soggy and came with a spoonful of mayo (tartar suace?)
My guest's meal was much worse though. She order a steak fillet with the same butternut squash veggie. This is where things really took a turn for the worse. She didn't get the butternut squash either. Instead we got some wacked-out explanation of why this was a good substitute from the owner. He was the person who brought our meals out and apparently prepared them. Our first impression was that he was a bit under the influence. When he delivered the food, he claimed "you won't find a fillet like that anywhere". I certainly hope NOT. The steak was about as raw as when you buy it at the supermarket with only a little browning on the edges. After bringing the condition of the raw meat to his attention, he claimed that he mis-read the order and it was asked to be cooked medium-rare. Well, this piece of meat needed about ten minutes more on the grill to even get to medium-rare but It was supposed to be medium in the first place. So he took the meat back and cooked it for about two more minutes and then returned with it not looking much different than the first time. After expessing our continued concern, he went and made up a completely new dish which seemed to be OK but how do you know if it is safe to eat if he was offended. So, he just hovered over us without saying anything except, "Is that OK "honey"?" Not enough space left for the rest of the review but they ended up not charging us for any food or drinks. It was THAT BAD
