Editorial Review for Chopstix – by Scott Resch

The Scene
The portraits of music legends on the walls are big, but this L-shaped piano bar operates mostly on a smaller scale. A limited number of tables is available in both the front dining area and back bar, but minimal room doesn't bother the patrons, primarily sharp-dressed 30-somethings content to stand when seats are scarce. Only folks 21 and older are allowed.

The Draw
No place else in Seattle offers live entertainment like this: Rotating pairs of high-energy musicians take turns performing toe-tapping tunes on back-to-back baby grand pianos. The show starts at 8pm with rock-and-roll classics and more contemporary requests belted out with equal frequency. The food, particularly the Chopstix Burger and Chicken Salad Annie, comes in large portions and at reasonable prices.

A group of us girls went to have a good time. We got there at 8:30 and we were already packed in like sardines. We had to stand along the wall, which was alright, but the wait staff kept shoving us to get out of the way. Then we were fondled by the influx of 21 year old boys who were dancing around like it was their first time drinking. The singing staff was great, and knew a lot of good sing along songs. Despite feeling like I was in an MRI tube, we managed to have a good time, until the 16 year old waitress managed to lose my credit card and told me "why don't you check your purse". I was livid, and demanded she find it, NOW. She finally found it 30 minutes later with some other waitress. I was so angry. They had already put their own tip on it, so I left zero more. Bottom line, unless you like being in an MRI tube and being fondled by over-zealous boys, try to get a table, but good luck!

Pros: sing along, the piano and sing staff were great

Cons: the service and poor mismanaged waitstaff

Choptix's "Ladies Night" brought my and a group of friends out last Thursday evening. What a terrible experience! The place was only half-full, but we rarely saw any service at our table. Going up to the bar was no better - none of the 4 bartenders seemed interested in pouring anyone any drinks at all! Despite generous tips and a small crowd, this poor service continued throughout the night. While waiting at the bar, I struck up a conversation with the General Manager working that night. I told him I was very unhappy with the service. He said that I had no right to talk to him about those issues, and that I would be asked to leave if I complained to anyone else. I couldn't believe it! I will never go back to Chopstix. If you go, be prepared for a major headache (from the service, not from the weak drinks). If you want a piano bar that won't let you down, check out 88 keys in Pioneer Square.

Pros: Good piano music without any breaks

Cons: Condescending bartenders and managers

There's a whole lotta shakin' going on at this rockin' dueling-piano bar in Lower Queen Anne.  See the full editorial review.
