The Scene
This second-floor restaurant inside the Crimson Galleria lacks the bamboo-laden comfort of its Chinatown sibling, resembling instead an oddly designed industrial loft. Bubbly modern light fixtures, exposed ductwork and faux-glass sculptural tables are an awkward fit, as if left over from the space's previous tenant. The clamorous room's best feature is a row of full-length windows along the back wall, looking down on the parade of Cambridge street traffic below. Efficient service is precise, but lacks finesse.
The Food
Insanely hot spices work aside ginger, curry and tamarind to create an enormous and uneven seafood-heavy Malaysian menu combining Chinese, Thai and Indian influences. Order carefully, as some entrees are as bland and unimaginative as neighborhood takeout. Go for distinctive dishes like sweet and sour mango chicken, with heaps of mango and crunchy noodles served in a mango shell. Be wary of the spicy notation next to certain menu items--it means serious heat.

I am a regular at Penang in CHINATOWN, until a few days ago, I order 2 take out. When I got home I started to eat and soon found a short hair in my rice...eww but thats not it...Then, my father was eating the veggies and pulled out a long hair from his mouth from the other take out box!!! Erk! Be careful and watch your food. I love the taste but not the hair.

Used to be very good - seems to have declined sharply. Soups are tasteless, dishes have little variety, not very flavorful.

I've been going to Penang for years (both at Harvard Sq and Chinatown) and never been disappointed with their consistent quality of food and service. BUT, the Cambridge location is now called "Rendang", with a new menu - new graphic design, same dishes, but higher prices. Before, we would spend around $15 each for 5-6 people (no drinks), sharing family-style. Last week, my friends & I ordered pretty much our same favorite dishes and paid a whopping $24 each. The Chinatown location is still called Penang - so I'll guess I'll stick to that one.

Know Before You Go:
Penang has no liquor license. Try a wickedly sweet fresh watermelon drink with dinner, then head to nearby Grendel's Den for a nightcap.
Save Money:
Lunch specials (Mon-Fri, 11:30am-3pm) are a steal, with salad or soup, rice, an appetizer and your choice of more than a dozen entrees--all for $6.95.
Parking:
Harvard Square has none. Take the Red Line T--the restaurant is just a five-minute walk.
Save Time:
The restaurant is a bit hidden: Enter the Crimson Galleria and head up the stairs; the entrance is near the front of the building.
