Substandard Sushi = Great Miso.
To be fair, I have to start this review out by stating that many people in town like Hiros. I'm not one of them.
I went there one time and felt that the place was over priced and the food was not very good. The Edamame was overcooked, the California Roll was horrible. It was like COSTCO crab salad rolled in rice and nori. However when I sent the california roll back they were kind enough to deduct the price from our bill and they also gave us a free desert.
The deluxe miso soup was very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
The mint green atmosphere is somewhat stark, but it is clean and OK.
I prefer to go to Karma Sushi where they have happy hour daily til 8pm. you can get some pretty good sushi deals. That said, even Karma's sushi is only average. Overall flagstaff is just not a good town for sushi.
Best Sushi, Sashimi in Flagstaff!!. I'm a certified service reviewer living in Phoenix. I visit Flagstaff about once a month. Whenever I?m there, I always try to stop by at Hiro?s for fresh sushi, sashimi and other authentic Japanese appetizers. My experience at Hiro?s, unlike others in this site has commented (about imitation crab, etc.), the food is excellent. You just have to know what you order. If you order many items with imitation crab, you will get imitation crab. (There is nothing wrong with their imitation crab.) Hiro?s has nice photo sushi menu. If people are not familiar with their food, you can see the picture of it. Because of their popularity (I guess most people knows what?s good!!) some times the food serving may take little time. But, well? their food is worth the wait! Have a cold beer or hot Sake and enjoy your time.
awesome food. i completely disagree. any of the rolls can be substituted with real crab.. and if you're getting nothing but rolls with imitation crab, you obviously only order 'americanized' rolls. personally, of all the japanese restaurants i've been to in the united states, this is one that i have found to be the best tasting. it's as close to authentic as i have found (and i grew up in japan so...) but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Bad service...bad sushi. My bf and I were in Flagstaff for the day doing some shopping. We were famished and both had sushi cravings because we had planned on another sushi restaurant but randomly end up at Hiro's due to its location. The wait wasn't really that long... but after being seated everything went down hill. We ordered a lot of food... always excited to try new sushi! Our orders from the kitchen came right out and after waiting... and more waiting... and more waiting... our waiter came and asked if we would like dessert or our check? So we told him that we were waiting on our sushi still. After that he did his best to bring it out, but we were in such a hurry that half of it had to be boxed up to go. The sushi was a complete let down. There was a lot of imitation crab used in almost every order... it got almost nauseating to keep eating. It was cheaper than most sushi places I normally go to... so I guess you really do get what you pay for. I would not go there again or recommend it.
MAYONNAISE + KRAB DOES NOT = SUSHI. Mayonnaise Krab Eww! Just about every roll we ordered was jam-packed with tons of rice and a disgusting amount of krab meat not crab meat K-R-A-B. I was really looking forward to dining at Hiro?s but sadly disappointed. I left with a terrible tummy ache. I never want to eat imitation crab meat again ? talk about an over dose. Come-on Hiro sushi chefs let?s get a little more creative instead of cramming the rolls with ?seafood salad?.
