Five stars aren't enough!. While visiting family in Chester, we had the good fortune to be brought to this intimate, elegant, and wonderful restaurant. The food was to die for, at an unoffensive prie - I was instantly jealous of those who could dine every day and enjoy the ever-changing menu. The staff were gracious, giving us a dessert on the house upon hearing it was my first time here. This flawless heaven of a restaurant truly raises the bar!
If you want Rudeness and Poor Service then Go. We had lunch last week with local friends from Chester and were warned that the staff were a bit snobish and rude. Wow what an understatement. The hostess was unbeliveable . It was the worst experience ever . we were treated as if we were asking for a free handout instead of paying for the most expensive food in the area . felt sorry for the waiter as he acted as if he went through this before . we will never go there again ,its really too bad as the food was good
Don't expect friendly conversation!.
As a fairly new Chester resident (almost 5 years now..but that's still considered new to many!) I want to "like" this place but after 5 visits I have to say I'm extremely disappointed. I felt the need to write this review after my most recent visit.
I went to the River Tavern to have a cocktail before meeting a girlfriend of mine on a rare weeknight that I had a babysitter and could sneak out without my toddler! I sat at the bar beside a couple that was eating dinner. They chatted with the bartender as if they had known him for years. I tried to participate in the conversation (the bar only seats about 8 people across so it's very hard to ignore what the others are talking about...especially when you are sitting by yourself!). Not only was my comment dismissed and ignored but they continued talking to each other (bartender and other couple) the entire time it took me to drink my cocktail with no effort by the bartender to include me in the conversation or ask how I liked my drink. One subject of their conversation was how "slow" business was this time of year...well, with this type of service and snobbery, I wonder why???
I'd love to know what type of clientele the River Tavern is trying to attract. I guess it's not married Chester residents in their 30s that will be dining and spending their high disposable incomes at many of the other establishments that welcome and include us! (Sigs, Lupo etc..this is good news for you!!)
a perfect marriage of flavor. how could you NOT like this place???? the atmosphere is warm and inviting, the food outrageously delicious...the server was as attentive as she needed to be...i would not hesitate to make the drive out there again! what a great way to spend a sunday night...
Nothing to brag about. Service was slow; wait staff was not attentive. Food reeked with garlic; limited menu. Half price on glasses of wine helped salvage a ho-hum evening.
