Horrible Service, Lousy Food. This place was one I wanted to try, so we went on a Saturday, there were only about 5 others in the place, first we were shocked at the bottom on the menu where is says "First order of chips free...others 1.50 each" We ordered fajtas for 2, the came out on a cold plate and were not good. We knew it would do no good to complain as our waiter spoke limited english. Ruined our whole day.
Great Food/Staff. After visiting US Border Cantina the first time I knew this would become one of my favorite local spots. Jose, Alex and the rest of the staff are friendly, attentive and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and to ensure your experience is fabulous. Their outdoor patio is great for sipping margaritas on nice sunny days. Their menu includes Nashville's best Chile Relleno as well as great tasting burritos. I also recommend their Monterey Steak Salad...yummy! Although it can get crowded during peak hours and during the school year - it's still one of my favorite neighborhood stops just for drinks or for a complete meal.
Go to Chili's instead.
Since the departure of Rio Bravo, the availability of middle-of-the-road Mexican fare has seemed scarce. So with a hopeful spirit, I tried US Border Cantina. Apparently, it's more of a party-hearty Mexican place popular with Vandy frat boys who drink too many margaritas on Sunday afternoons to leave peacefully. The food is also unremarkable in every way, as well as bland and heavy.
If it's Rio-Bravo-style food you're after, I would imagine Chili's would be a far better bet. If, however, you're looking for margaritas and some forgettable food to cushion your liver, this may be the place.
