The House of Shock began as a pet project of rock band Pantera singer Philip Anselmo, who started it with a few of his friends in 1992. Ten years later, it's one of New Orlean's leading Halloween attractions. Within its veritable cauldron of gore, don't be surprised to see live maggots, inverted crosses red with blood and numerous Satanic images. Relatively new is the moving torture chamber and an outdoor multimedia show.

The Characters
Along with moving parts and spinning walls, more than 200 people act as performers in the grotesqueness. Don't expect to find your run-of-the-mill ghosts, goblins and witches here: Demonic figures such as Moloch, the Abomination of Satan (whatever that means); Eihwaz, Harvester of the Dead; and Ancient Druid of the Apocalypse Lord Belial are among the hellish minions that are the specialty of the house.
