Editorial Review for The Hotel Cafe – by Tara de Lis
The Scene
Arrive early to score one of the too-close-together rickety tables, a la a Parisian cafe. Otherwise, you'll end up standing three rows deep behind the seating area. Attention is always focused on the small stage, where talented local singer-songwriters--and occasionally notable names like Swedish sensation Jose Gonzalez--share their musical vision. The cappuccino bar of the establishment's early days has evolved into a full liquor license, but there is still typical cafe fare to nibble on.
The Draw
There aren't many places in Hollywood where one will hear lyrics like, "Well, you know old Jethro went crazy ..." In fact, it's hard to believe this place even exists, let alone in the trendy Cahuenga Corridor. Couples in their 40s sit side by side with undernourished, young rockers. The atmosphere is infinitely friendly--ask the guy next to you how his panini is treating him, and he might just tear off a bite for you.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoPeople come here to appreciate quality music, so if you need to have a long conversation during the set, do it outside. Discreet asides to your neighbors are usually fine, though.

If you are going to a later show on the weekend, show up early or you will not find parking. There is parking on Selma but that area is not safe for people alone. Go with a group. Great shows but go during the week. Plus during the week, you can actually get a seat. Weekends are so crowded you need a reservation to see some musicians. If you are going on a weekend, make a reservation. Great music and good food try the panini. Definite recommendation for weeknights!
Pros: Music and less crowded on weeknights.
Cons: Parking situation esp on weekends. Some performers are sold out...so book early.

Best to get here early to get a table. Carpool as you might have to park blocks away.My friend and I did not feel safe walking back to our car.By the time you find parking, the tables are taken. Good food and good music. This is a good place for a group.
Pros: Music
Cons: Parking is an issue every night of the week.
