AVOID SAM'S SUSHI. We had been hearing about Sam's for a while so 4 of us went for lunch. We walked in, Sam asked if we were new, we were. He said he only served regulars and he would not serve us. I have never been treated like that.
Delicious, inexpensive. Not a lot of seating. Have to pay to park. BUT ALL WORTH IT!. Sam is wonderful. He's tough, but a nice guy when you scratch the surface. He makes wonderfully authentic, Japanese sushi and boy is it delicious! It's a small place, but the food and prices more than make up for the lack of elbow room. I went there with my best friend back in April of 08. We couldn't believe the quality, quantity and value! All excellent! LOVE IT! Highly recommend. Thanks for taking me out for the best, Walt! Love ya! xo
Rude Jap. Food is cheap, taste "OK", long wait during lunch hour, and he's very rude sometimes. Also, you can order whatever you want, but he will give you whatever HE wants. Not recommended, unless you?d exchange your pride for some cheap food.
May be my favorite restaurant in Nashville.
Sam's is truly everything that you've heard and more. He is the sushi Nazzi behind the counter, which I never would have believed had I not seen him kick someone out. Not only is the food extremely affordable, but it tastes great too. Sam will tell you where to get better tasting food, but he'll also tell you he's the cheapest, but to me it's great. If you are going with a group you'd be better to go after 1PM, but just one or two people can probably squeeze in if you go early.
After you stuff yourself with his sushi, you get a great treat of Valencia orange slices (so good you'd pay extra for more if he'd let you). I have nothing bad to say of this place, except don't tip, no matter how much you'd like to. Make sure to read the signs if you're new or else you could get cut or kicked out.
Great Sushi, Great Value. Sam's Sushi isnt the most spacious, or most fancy place, but it is true to its name.....there is Sam and there is sushi, and both are wonderful.....You get HUGE helpings, and since its a one man operation, there are low overheads which means LOW PRICE (Lunch special is 2 HUGE rolls of sushi for under 5 bucks)...other sushi spots in downtown area charge 6 bucks for ONE sushi roll)....I love this place!!!
GO EARLY..... SAMS is by far the best sushi bar in town! My boyfriend and I have a standing date every friday night there. We love the food and his NAZZI type attitude towards new customers is great to watch. My suggestion would be to go with a regular customer that knows the ropes. Sams bark is louder that his bite. He's great to his regulars ..... I would recomend this place to anyone that loves CHEAP SUSHI....GREG AND I LOOK FORWARD TO OUR DATE NIGHTS AT SAMS!!!!!
Seinfeld's Soup Nazzi meets Sushi.
Sam is defniatley a charactor! Worth checking out!
Sam will admit that he is not the best sushi in Nashville, but he is the cheapest.
A group of 3 can order all the food they can eat, and be out the door for arround $20
Sushi spot serves no-frills maki and nigiri to a host of downtown faithful..
In Short
The Japanese proprietor is often the sole employee at this tiny nook on the corner of Church Street and Printer's Alley, where he holds court behind the sushi bar. But even with space for just 20 patrons, office workers file in to scribble orders for tuna rolls, salmon nigiri and other basics on plain notepads. A mish-mash of faux fish netting, Titans scarves and stacks of Kirin beer boxes lend an East meets West kitsch.
Rules of Sam's.
Sam's is superb. The lunch special of one sushi roll and 3 pieces of nigiri for $4.75 is a great value: the sushi rolls are huge--8 pieces, each about 1" deep and 1.5" in diameter. When I've been I've gotten an extra piece of nigiri! Eel and yellowtail are excellent.
You must order properly. Write what your order, name, and if you'd like it to go on a notepad. Place the paper on the sushi case if there is room. If not, wait until there is. Try to go after 1:30pm, especially if you are new. When we were the only diners there--around 2:30pm, Sam regaled us with stories of travel and politics, and was generous in response to our naivete of his procedures. When I went back and there were a few other parties there and I forgot to write my name, I was gently reprimanded. Worth it!
Getting your daily share of abuse can be fun. I commute to Nashville from time to time and this place is great. I have some friends there and am more than happy to take them to Sams if they like sushi. The food is good the value for your money is great. And the ambiance is hilarious. The place is tiny, I go there and pull off the newbie routine. They guy starts to blow his stack. I act confused and he gets madder. Then after asking a thousand pardons he calms down. Then ask if he serves burgers? Its all over again. The place is a lot of fun. I do not think the guy is really serious hard to tell.
