Kenichi, an upscale Japanese restaurant, is a good place to begin an Aspen stay, just the place for weary travelers to enjoy a healthy, light meal. When you have jet lag and go from sea level to approximately 9000', the last thing you need is heavy food. We were four people and all decided to order what we thought would be small plates of interesting food, but it turned out that the portions were highly shareable. Two of us had Asian wraps with tofu, mango, and one other ingredient that eludes me at the moment. Lettuce leaves were used to wrap it all. Suffice it to say that the portions were very generous, as was true with my cold soba noodles and bbq chicken strip appetizer. The fourth in our party had the bamboo salmon, a preparation described on the menu as Kenichi's secret method of cooking salmon and vegetables in a bamboo skin wrapper to retain the natural flavor of the fish. It was served with a passion fruit salsa. While it was a little awkward to eat, (Just how does one eat salmon enclosed in bamboo?) he eventually figured it out and liked it. We also ordered a fine rainbow roll cut in realistic slices, and we all shared the flavorful but not overly spicy seaweed salad. The soothing atmosphere of the room and the gentle food made for a great introduction to the cuisine of Aspen.

I had read great reviews for Kenichi and had high expectations, which might explain why I was somewhat disappointed in the actual experience. My general observation is that Kenichi's is pretty full of themselves! We had dinner reservations for Thursday and it was packed. The hostess was gruff, practically demanding if we had a reservation. Our server was also arrogant. The lighting was so low that we could barely read our menus. Note to Kenichi: Pay the light bill! And there was no sense to the order in which they brought our food -- soups, appetizers, entrees, appearing totally out of sequence. I admit their food was very tasty, though expensive. The Blue Fin tuna sushi and miso soup tempura get high ratings. Oh, and they don't serve coffee, only tea.
