Just off Healdsburg's central square, this sunny brewpub is a regular afternoon stop for beer-loving locals. While one half of Healdsburg feels hoity-toity, the rest is unpretentious and even working class, and Bear Republic, whose T.G.I.F.-style decor belies its reputation as a serious microbrewery, definitely falls into the latter lot. Above the copper bar hang no fewer than 11 awards from the Great American Beer Festival, many of them for their signature Racer 5 IPA--the brewers here seem to specialize in extra potent, hoppy beers, many of them 8-percent alcohol or above--and there's a…

Poor quality food

Middle of the road is kind. I felt that the food was marginal at best, in fact, it was barely edible. The menu describes the salad as local baby greens, but what was served was iceberg bag lettuce with shredded cheddar cheese on top. The chicken fettucine pasta hosted chopped up chicken which was probably three days old. Although they had a great IPA, I will not be returning to this brew pub.
Good bar food

Someone mentioned that it is pretty hard to screw up pub food, and I totally agree. The food here is nothing special, the mircrobrews are tasty, but nothing spectacular. Bear is a solid place for drinks and eats, but don't expect more than you should. And, don't expect horrible food or drinks either. It serves its purpose, good waiters, nice attitude and adequate food and drinks. Great location near the square also.
friendly brew pub, tasty beer & awesome fries

Lots of regulars sit at the bar and belong to the "Brew Buddy" club and sip from their regular super mugs! We sat by one regular "rick" who had all types of facts about the beers and flavors. He was sipping on a mixture of the Rocket Ale and Big Bear Ale which my husband loved. I myself like the dark stouts mixed with the Cider and the Bartender reccomended thier Big Bear with the Rasberry cider. It was so yummy and good to the very last sip. The garlic fries comes in a HUGE basket, easily a meal replacement for 2 plus beer or an appetizer for several. Wish we had eaten here for dinner instead of Zin. The staff was friendly and the regulars were even friendlier. WE will definately visit again!
- Pros: great beer and food
- Cons: too far from us East Bay-ers =(
Great Brew, Ordinary Food

This is a nice little brew pub I like a lot. Lot's of choices of Microbrews. Travellers coming to the area will like it if they are beer lovers. Nice pub atmosphere. They also have food which is middle-of-the-road at best. It's hard to screw-up pub food, but this place needs to change their menu and recipes - and please get a different bun than those stale onion buns they use for burgers -- yecch!
- Pros: Great Beer, Pub Ambience, Entertainment
- Cons: Mediocre Food
