Good for take out dinner – Not bad at all. It is not great but it will do on a week night when you've had a hard day and there's no way you are cooking.
In The Pit Stain That is Sonoma County, Good Pizza Exists – What business do people in Santa Rosa have making pizza? Well, to be honest with you there is legit pizza in Santa Rosa. Mombo's is alright for that mock New York fast slice style, and Mary's is okay if you get into it knowing you are eating Mary's Pizza and not legitimate Italian Pizza. You know, the more Californian-American style - a glorified Round Table I would say. La Vera... different story. Let me tell you something... if you find yourself in this pit stain of a city, and you are looking for pizza... keep away form the other spots and any other place you see pizza being sold. La Vera is the place for you, real Italian pies, real Italian options, pastas, gelato, and good service. La Vera was the second best pizza in the nation ins 2006 according to a Sonoma County newspaper. That is great and all - but maybe this newspaper did not go to New York. Every pizza I had in New York (minus Pomodoro's - aka garbage slice) blew La Vera out of the water. However, when you live in California this is something you look for. Better than anyone I can think of in San Francisco (Arinel? No! Sbarro is better than that ****). La Vera is legit, fresh cheeses, well thought out family recipes, fresh basil on anything! These people know what they are doing. But hey don't trust me... I'm just some slob who eats too much pizza and appreciates the finer pizzas in life, what do I know?
Everythings great except the crust – Jan 2006: The extra large is 17". I got the Roma combo $24.95 with red sauce, artichoke hearts, green onions, green olives garlic, red peppers, and topped with pesto sauce. I did a sub though red peppers & artichoke hearts for Italian sausage, yellow onion for green, and black olives for green. The sausage was not too spicy and it was medium in seasoning. It is of a higher quality than most. The toppings were to the edge and better than avg in qty. The sauce was great. The cheese was adequate and they present you with fresh parmesan. Few tables downstairs & upstairs is inconvenient and hot. The crust was NY style and again it appeared the water absorbtion level failed to crisp the dough. The wonderful flavor of this pizza overshadowed the gum line problem and the fact the bottom crust was 50% burnt.
June 2006 update. Got a single topping sausage large pizza. The cheese quality is above average and the crust was better prepared. Nearly no gum line. If this keeps up they are going to become the go to place for a decent pie.
