Trendy Hipster Hangout... Lame food.. So yeah... this is the typical "too cool for school" hang out for East Nashville, any who... This place is over rated and over priced. The pros only would be the Margaritas and the salsa (if you can get refills.) The cons would be the horribly bland and tasteless food and the lackluster wait staff who seems to have an attitude at all times?? I ordered the chicken chimi and it was just a deep fried flour tortilla with bland pulled roasted chicken inside - where's the onions, peppers, hot spice, cheese, the mexican flava??!!! So I figured it was just that dish so the next time we went I ordered the fish tacos... again I could have went to Captain D's grabbed a tort wrap and a pack of hot sauce at taco bell and had more flavor than this place. The portion was incredibly small and tasteless. That was the last time I have been there. My boyfriend (who is from New Mexico and grew up in Cali) agrees this place is lacking on flavor. If you want that cool Emo kid vibe to smoke your reds then this is your place. If you are looking for decent Mex (not true of course we are in Tenn.) visit Las Maracas a little bit further down Gallatin Rd. At least you can have a little bit of flavor and not leave hungry. Or go to San Luis (dont know the name but thats what shows up on my bank statements) on Harding right off I24E to the right. Look for the big smoking bbq's and the smell of spicy meat to your left. You have to stand in line (no seating) and you can only order Carnitas of different flavors but they are amazing! Served on little corn (the real deal tortillas!) and they come with homemade habanero green sauce. I never see "gringos" there and the staff dont speak english. But its real and its good!!!
only crowded because it's on the eastside and there are no options over here..
my girlfriend and i eat here about once every week or so. truth be told, she likes it more than i do, but it's more of a convenience factor than anything else. las maracas (which is way better) is the only other mexican place on the eastside, let me go through the pros and cons and my major gripes (which are really why it gets two stars).
pros: very close, some decent originality to the menu, the service -- i am actually a bit surprised to see all of the complaints about the service. maybe it's because we always get one of the same 3 or 4 girls when we go there (and they recognize us), but the service (by the actual servers) has easily got to be the best part. always really nice and fast and helpful.
cons: it's a little cramped in there and the vibe is a little weird sometimes (probably because of the layout.) also, the food here really is bland. i just don't understand the folks on here who rave about the food -- tastes vary, of course -- but as one of my coworkers used to describe this place, it very "microwavey". the best thing i have had on the menu is the chile relleno in the cinnamon batter. there are a few other decent items, but the rest of the menu is very bland and i think their burritos and rice are completely flavorless. my "favorite" salsa of the 3 is the green salsa, but it is only good relative to the other two on the table, in my opinion.
major gripes: the host/hostesses are weird, unhelpful, can't make eye contact, and treat pretty much everyone that walks in like an afterthought. the lone guy working up front is really snooty for reasons i can't figure out. dude, you are overly feminine, unattractive and likely not of the station of the majority of people you roll your eyes at. i am certain that whatever sense of entitlement you have is not earned and will likely be beaten out of you one day by someone with far less patience than myself, so perhaps do yourself a favor and curtail this behavior immediately.
Completely unprofessional, NO Customer Service at all. i have never been let down like this before. we received confirmation from mgt at rose pepper for our group event of 20 people. people were traveling from out of town to meet for this event. less than 2 days before the event the front desk girl calls me and says, "we have decided that they are too popular to accomidate a group of 20 for a saturday night, your group event can nolonger be held here". i suggested that we can be out on the porch with their space heaters and she replied with, "no, it is not an inside or outside problem, we just are too popular to hold an event for 20 people". the mgt at rose pepper is bollocks. this place is a waste of money and i found a rodent in the tortilla soup. just kidding about that but the mgt sux. i will insure that all 20 of the attendees of my event will tell 5 people each about this unprofessional experience. hey rose pepper mgt, you suk.
Rude management-decent food.. The food at rosepepper is good but the service is AWFUL!!! They will not accomodate large parites bc they say "they are far to popular to seat a large group on a busy night" What??? Isn't that what the restaurant industry is...service and accomodation?? They said they would not work with us and would rather not have us. It is for a bday, I offered to have us sit on the deck with the heaters and they still said no. Sounds to me like they think they are too good to help. My family is in the restaurant business, very succesfully, and this is NOT how they got there, that is for sure!!!!!!
I've had better.... My boyfriend and I were told that this place has the best Mexican food in Nashville by some of his colleagues, so I had pretty high expectations from the start. I love hot food so I chose the chile verde. It was definitely HOT, but otherwise flavorless. After tasting the chile verde I ordered guacamole to try to add some flavor to my dish. The guac had excellent texture, but was equally flavorless. I ended up dumping the three different salsas onto my dish just so it tasted like something. I also had a margie. It was okay, but not great. They put plenty of tequila in it, but it just wasn't up to par with the margies I get at the place we normally go. The service was mediocre as well. The waiter wasn't particularly friendly, but did his job sufficiently except for taking FOREVER to get my boyfriend a water after he tasted my chile verde. Overall, I'd say this restaurant will do if you don't have anywhere better to go, but there are much better places to eat in the area as far as quality of food and service are concerned.
BEST TACO SALAD, WORST FRIED AVOCADO. Rosepepper has hands down the best taco salad on the planet and thats what i went there for on this recent visit but I looked over the menu for maybe an appetizer and found that they now offer avocado fries. well I've already had fried avocado at another east nashville establishment that I knew would be hard to beat not to mention a little weird that rosepepper would even try to copy them and sure enough it was a failed attempt. I didn't know you could ruin an avocado but they sure have managed to do just that. Hey rosepepper, stick to what you do best and leave avocado frying to the Alleycat.
We love it. My husband and I go to Rosepepper as often as possible! The food is good and inexpensive, and the people are friendly. It's our fave in East Nashville.
Love the Salsa!. I don't even like Mexican food that much and I like this place. I could care less about trends or atmosphere. It's just good food. And we've always had good service. The only drawback is that it's so popular and hard to get in on a weekend night. And I love all the salsas and chips they give you.
Hottest green chile sauce I've ever had..
This East Nashville restaurant is a real find. The food is always spicy and always good. Any dish with their green chile pork is a winner. And to top it all off, they urge patrons to refrain from cell phone using in the dining area, making for a much more pleasurable dining experience.
The only draw back is the hipster snob attitude of the young and pretty staff. It can be hard to get their attention as they are always busy blathering to each other about the newest Arcade Fire album or primping in the mirror trying to look as if they just rolled out of bed.
Never go there, they will try to rush you out the door before you are finished eating..
My son took me there last week after a long day of shooting film. It's in his neighborhood.
We got seated promptly and politely. The ambiance is a little on the loud side, but not too bad. Food was sort of bland but reasonably priced.
Now for the gotcha!!!! I will never, ever in my lifetime return to this place. Allow me to describe:
Once served we began to eat at a normal pace. I was about 1/2 done with my entre' and had not touched much of the "tex-mex" platter that had all the tortillas, etc. when the bus boy asked in very poor English if he could take that plate away. I answered "no, not yet." He reached for the plate. I said no again very emphatically waving my hands over the plate in an attempt indicate that he should leave it. He reached again to take the plate. I don't know what caused him to finally get the idea that I was still eating, but he left the area...fine, we can settle down to finishing our meal in peace.
Being somewhat of a "customer service oriented person" I waved the waitress over several minutes later. I attempted to politely inform her of the situation with the intent that information helps things improve. When I told her what happened she looked at me like I was crazy. We had come in for a nice leisurely meal, not to get fast food. She correctly at that point offered to have the manager come over to our table.
Well, we finished our meal, denied the desserts, paid the bill, etc. And still no manager...I mean for a long time, no manager.
As we were leaving the manager came out of hiding in her office and asked, "Did you want me?". "Well, yes, the waitress said your were coming to our table." The manager chided me for scolding the bus boy "who was just doing his job." I suggested that taking a plate away from someone still eating was not doing his job.
Bottom line...the manager needs to be fired and someone who cares brought in.
