The Background – One especially hot desert day in the late 1930s, electrical engineer Francis F. Crocker looked up at the surrounding snow-capped mountains and wished he could be where it was "nice and cool." In 1963, Crocker's dream became reality when the first passenger-carrying tram traveled up more than 12,000 feet of cable to reach the top of Mt. San Jacinto. In 2000, the trams were updated with two fully modernized 80-passenger cars. – – The Experience – The trams make two full rotations during the 15-minute journey offering stunning views of the Sonora desert…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
The ear-popping ride can be unnerving for those afraid of high altitudes and/or confined spaces.
Look Good:
The temperature at the Mountain Station is usually 30 degrees cooler than the Valley Station, so dress appropriately.
When to Go:
Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the last car up leaves an hour later, at 9pm.

Beautiful

It is a nice thing to do when you are out in that area. The tram takes you up the mountain and the temperature drops significantly when you get to the top and I went in the middle of summer you know how hot it can be in Palm Springs. Nice view from the top, fresh air. It's fun just to go up there and take a hike.

Thrilling

by slhslh at Citysearch

I'm a Palm Springs native and have been on the tram at least 20 times. The ride is exciting, the views incredible, and the hiking and cross-country skiing at the top are awesome. You can find easy, moderate, and difficult hikes. Bring a picnic, you camera, and plan to hang out for the day. In the winter it's fun just to go up to play in the snow.

Best? Nice view but

Facilities are old, the service is non existent, the prices are high and the food is on calibre with 1970's football or baseball stadium food. For view, it is fine. For food, please. The owner is cheap and unwilling to invest in making this the superior destination spot it could be. For romance, try La Valleuris or Shame on the Moon.

  • Pros: View
  • Cons: Food, Price, Facilities
