What People Are Saying About Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding Hse

In Short – Though Miss Mary passed away in the '80s, her memory and traditions are alive and well. Folks are called in from the porch with the ring of the dinner bell. Women with the cooing drawl of Scarlett O'Hara preside over each table, sparking conversation and ensuring that the rules of Southern hospitality are followed. Heaping portions of comfort food like fried chicken, meat loaf, ribs and catfish are passed around.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- Though Jack Daniel himself was a regular customer back in the day and his great-grandniece is the proprietress, this is a dry county, so no cocktails are served. Still, the alcohol is a popular entree ingredient.
- When to Go:
- During Christmastime, the house and meals are dressed to the nines with holiday cheer, and roast turkey, country ham and cornbread dressing fill your plate.
- Save Time:
- Miss Mary's is very popular with both tourists and locals so reservations are a must.

Miss Mary Bobo's is a great place to eat if you enjoy wonderful southern cooking. I recommend that you make reservations in advance and ask to be placed at the round table (in the basement). The food is passed "family style," and the round table has a lazy Susan so it is easier to get the food you want. You don't have to bother anyone to pass a certain dish. There is a waiting list available. If you don't have reservations, just have them call you if they have cancellations...worked well for me in the past. Debbie is always very helpful! One person mentioned the old furniture in the waiting area...it's a very old historical home. That is part of the atmosphere. Enjoy your meal. I love everything I've eaten at Miss Mary's, but I highly recommend the baked apples and green chilies and rice casserole! YUMMY
- Pros: mouth-watering, history, wait list
- Cons: reservations
Rude management, no atmosphere.

Don't believe what these people say about "The Waiting List". It is all bunk. Their rule is if you get there by 5 minutes before 1pm and any party who has reservations is not there, you get to take their place. We were told this at least 3 times by the restaurant that day. My husband and I were #1 on the "The Waiting List" and a party of seven didn't show up at 1 pm. Twice we were told by the owner to wait. After nearly 20 minutes after, the party of 7 showed but we left and will never return. If you make rules for others to go by, then stick to them yourself! The furniture in the front room was old and there were smells.
- Cons: rude management, odors, no ambience
