Great Dining Near Historic Sonoma Square – A very interesting menu very well executed and reasonably priced. Optional portion sizes were welcome and the cheese selection noteworthy. Early on a Sunday evening, the space was busy, its family-friendliness evident in the contribution of a few children to the moderate noise level. Worth a special trip even if you're not staying in the area and worth regular visits if you live in the area.
Great! – Great food and nice atmosphere. The bar is beautiful and the music was great.
Cozy atmosphere – Lately the girl and fig has been either great or horrible. Most of the times it's fine, but if you have a bad waitress, watch out! However, dessert has always been excellent and the location was easy to find.
Some tasty food but not 100% authentic and snobby hostess. – Found this place via opentable. Sounded really tasty, my wife is a serious Francophile. We arrived with our young son, who sleeps non-stop through meals and doesn't utter a peep. The hostess treated him the way Superman regards Kryptonite. But we are not easily bullied as a family and insisted on being seated as per our reservation. Anyways, from that point on things got better. The servers were nice enough. Salad was really tasty with pancetta and figs. Steak tartare well-prepared though not super fresh. Croque Monsieur was more of a ham and cheese sandwich. There was no hollandaise and the cheese was inside rather than the proper outside. Wine was good but not a huge selection considering the proximity to so many Sonoma vineyards. All in all a mixed bag. Some good food really poor attitude at the front door. Too many other excellent places in Sonoma to give this place our repeat business though.
One of my favorite stops in Wine Country – It's not just the name of the restaurant that's great - it's the food as well. We were seating outside under an umbrella on their lovely patio, and we started with a couple mixed drinks a fig royale (like a kir royale but with fig syrup instead of grenadine) and a fig martini. Both were good. The green salad with grilled figs is a must - arugula, pecans, chevre, pancetta, and fig & port vinaigrette. Mom got an open-faced roasted pork loin sandwich with apple & apricot chutney, grilled country bread, and celery root salad that was surprisingly good. And I got a burger that was the most wonderful, gourmet burger imaginable with French herbs in the top sirloin patty, grilled onions, and mixed greens instead of lettuce. And my most favorite part of the meal was the lavender creme brulee. What a unique (and very French) recipe. The amount of lavender flavor was perfect - present in every bite but not overbearing. When I go back, the lavender creme brulee will be the first thing I order. Centrally located in the heart of downtown Sonoma square near the visitor center and Sonoma Mission, there are plenty of places to walk around and see before or after your meal. Definitely make The Girl and The Fig a part of your trip to Sonoma. This is my third time to visit Sonoma and the Wine Country, and this restaurant is one of my favorites.
Simply the worst experience – When you visit wine country you expect the servers to know the wine list - you also expect they would recommend local wine since you are visiting "the" wine region. Dont expect that experience here . As for the food - tired and weary. I suspect the name carries them because the food and service doesnt!
ONE OF WINE COUNTRY's WORST RESTAURANTS – I'm a local resident so I tend to know most of the restaurants in both Sonoma and Napa. Yet my first visit to THE GIRL & THE FIG was just this July of 2007. I found few locals but mnay tourists and the restaurant itself is charming; especially with its outdoor large patio (very cozy).
My first issue was that we still had to wait 30-40 minutes beyond our booked reservation. Yet my issues continued with the sub-standard wine list for a Wine Country restaurant. It continued with the very porr levels of service by our waitress and came to an end with the food itself.
While claiming to be French; it was to a degree. However, Thomas Keller's French restaurant called BOUCHON; in Napa is stunning in comparrision and quality; let alone the staffing being upscale and excellent..
There was no Chardonay or Pinot Grigeo on GIRL & THE FIG'S menu/wine list.. Thus we opted for a bottle of champagne/sparkling wine instead. Asking the waitress if we could first enjoy the wine, she came back every five minutes to take our order. Finally we gave in due to her insistence that we order within 15 minutes of our wines arrival.
All three of us ordered different items. All three of us said the food quality was sub-standard to a Sonoma/Napa venue. In fact I thought it was one of the worst restaurants in Sonoma/Napa.
The bread initially served had zero flavor and looked like it came out of a loaf of Costco's own brand. The roll on my sandwich was so hard, I placed it aside. The mushroom omlette another guest ordered had no mushrooms (a few in fairness). Side items with the entree didn't exists. All optional.
We didn't see our waitress again until the bill came. ..
We dine in Sonoma/Napa at least 1-2 times a week. Food and service are usually excellent and I've never had major issues with any restaurant in the region but THE GIRL AND THE FIG scores two stars at best based on service and food quality. There are so many better restaurants in the area.
Good for lunch – Ate lunch there last week. Food was very good, service great, and very interesting wine list. We had a wonderful butternut squash soup with blue cheese crumbles and pecans. They also have a wonderful cheese selection. I think the menu is somewhat limited for evening entree choices but good lunch spot.
The best local place to eat for locals! – My husband and I love this place.! We always sit at the bar and feel like we're part of a family. The bartenders are welcoming and are part of the whole experience of our nights here. The hamburgers are excellent and the polenta is outstanding!!! We wouldn't spend our date
nights anywhere else!!!
The best of Sonoma! – The Fig & Arugula Salad is a signature dish, you have to try it and it's one of the best salads we've ever tasted. We had the mussels & fries and the garden vegetable fritatta special (we were there for brunch,) and they were both amazing. Perfect when paired with the white wine flight. Which brings me to the wine list - off the beaten path and completely worth sampling. The only slight disappointment was the lavendar creme brulee, which was far too custardy and heavy, but offered a very good balance of natural lavendar. Paired nicely with the Bonny Doon late harvest viognier. Don't bother coming here if you don't appreciate French-style cooking and fine wines.
