Editorial Review for Ballard Shopping District – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
What's in store in Ballard? A great selection of children's books at Secret Garden Bookshop, Mexican pottery at La Tienda and take-home treats at Urban Dish. If a tattoo is too much of a commitment, Mehndi Madness paints complex, removable designs on clients' body parts. Ultra-girlie store, Olivine Atelier, stocks clothes, shoes, makeup and lingerie. Resident artist Curt Steiner sells handmade cards in Souvenir, his shop/studio, and owner Jenny Hoelscher makes the vintage fabric pillows at Pillow Fetish.

Excellent take-out and pasta sauces. The shop carries several tasty entrees, salads and side dishes. They have a small selection of wines and desserts and the staff is very helpful. Don't miss the rosemary or mustard roasted chicken or the wild mushroom ragout (in the fall).

Pros: central location, yummy food, helpful staff

Cons: parking needed

Clack across Old Town Ballard's cobblestone streets and visit Lucca; Its black walled exotica interior showcases Japanese stationary, taxidermy butterflies, chocolate gold foiled slippers, 18th Century Spanish apothecary and antique silver bracelets. Olivines has all the best girly designers, shiny hard wood floors, lovely sales girls, two giant dogs, lot's of shoes and bags. Souvenir has the most exquisite display windows and paper artwork ever. Bark is the coolest specialty shop for pets: pick up catnip rolled kitty cigars, pigs ears and sparkly collars. Re-Soul for mid-centuryesque furniture and design. Swing into Anchor Tattoo for a classic "Mother" inscrolled on your upper arm. The Palm Room for minimalist plantings and paintings. Plus a street full of hide-away art galleries and Cafes! Visit Ballard (not just for Norwegians anymore) to help bare the death of Freemont.
