Pisgah is a true getaway for wilderness lovers. Many isolated spots to enjoy many types of activities. Linville Gorge and Grandfather Mountain are the 2 most well known areas of Pisgah.

Do take care that if you plan on backcountry hiking that you get a good topographic map. Otherwise you may be in for more of an adventure than originally planned.

  • Pros: isolation, variety of trails, beauty
  • Cons: trailheads hard2find, water crossings

KIDS can have fun here too!

by keylime0385

I am a teen and I have grown up about half an hour from Pisgah Forest. I just wanted to say that there are a lot of things up there that your kids would enjoy too. I grew up there, I know how kids can think hiking is boring. I did for a while. But I don't think I could live without my mountains now. I really took them for granted growing up. ANyways, If you have kids, I would suggest going to Sliding Rock(a big wall of rock in a river that you can go and slide down into a swimmign hole for a small fee), go tubing down the rivers at any of the river areas, go to lake lure and swim on its beach or visit Chimney Rock which is right next door to it.

  • Pros: best scenery anywhere, tons of things to see, breathtaking views
  • Cons: requiresAlittleDrive, far from gas, etc., NO OTHER CONS!!!

The sky's the limit

Hiking and especially backpacking in the Shining Rock Wilderness Area is well worth the trip. No steep climbs or drops. Much of the trail is on an old railroad bed. In season the wild blueberries make a delicious addition to pancakes. In the fall the leaves are spectacular. Climb to the top of the balds for spectacular views during the day and also at night. On a clear night the stars will overwhealm you. Worth the trip any time of year. Parkway closed when covered with snow.

  • Pros: Good water source, Views great from mts., Shining rocks fun
  • Cons: Some skunk problems, Car park not secure
