While enchiladas, quesadillas and burritos have a place on the menu, it's Zocalo's authentic offerings (chiles rellenos, queso fundido, pollo con mole) that help separate this restaurant from the pack. Upbeat patrons down glasses of white sangria while watching guacamole being made table-side. Colorful Mexican glassware and masks lend a festive vibe to the proceedings.

I've traveled and eaten a fair amount in Mexico and I have to say that this little restaurant in the center of Arlington MA is totally authentic and that's a refreshing change in the world of Taco Bell, On the Border and all the other pseudo Mexican places I've eaten in. The food is well prepared, the flavors of the food are detectable because they're not masked by fiery chilli, it's not pretentious and above all the waiters leave you alone to enjoy your meal and don't suddenly pop up to ask you, "Is the food alright?" just when you've taken a mouthful, or push you to drink the latest flavor of Pucker Margarita! The only bad experience I've had there was when boorish over-loud people demanded what I suppose they're used to - the Taco Bell EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!! Woof, Woof - or does the Chihuahua yip....... Hey, the beers are good too!

Today my family and I (4 children under 8) had the misfortune of trying this place for the first, and last, time. From the second we stepped into the door, the "greeter" gave us the evil eye and attempted to make us feel as unwelcome as possible. They definitely do not like to see children coming. The cold unfriendliness continued until we finally left prematurely. At one point, when my 1.5 year old picked up a cheap electric candle from the table to inspect it, the waitress ran over and violently ripped it out of his hand making him, understandably, wail. On top of the hostile atmosphere, the food was simply awful, worse than cheaper chain places like Baja Fresh. The chips were right out of a bag, the jalapenos in my quesadilla were right out of a jar, and everything was soggy. The grilled chicked was also burnt and cold. You are literally better off going to Taco Bell than here. DO NOT GO with small children, unless you enjoy overt unfriendliness and can tolerate you children being physically assaulted. Amazing they still have any customers.

delicious food, casual but attentive service, yummy sangria--not sure why other reviewer dissed chips and salsa. i thought both were excellent. red and green salsas were both great. i lived in central texas for 10 years so i've had my share of chips and salsa.
