Overview
At 3,165 feet, Monadnock isn't intimidating by anyone's standards--and therein lies its beauty. In three or four hours round-trip, you can climb to an open ridge line and summit as rugged as you'll find in the White Mountains, enjoying superb scenery with vistas into Vermont and western Massachusetts.
The Experience
For years, many have called Monadnock one of the most hiked summits in the world. Reportedly, only Mount Fuji attracts more hikers. Folklore or not, Monadnock does indeed get crowded, especially on the summit. For a hiking challenge, hike in from the north on the Pumpelly Trail near Dublin Lake. Most routes to the summit are four-plus miles.

I went with my kids, ages 5 and 8, my mother, 76 year old grandmother, and my aunt and her 9 year old. It was challenging at times. There were parts that were a bit dangerous. I mean this is not just hiking a trail; at times we were scaling up the side of the mountain. One false move and you're toast. The whole trail wasn't perilous; just a few tricky spots. Luckily my grandmother is very active and veril and my kids are pretty tough and well-balanced because I don't recommend this for everyone's kids or grandparents. Definitely not infants or toddlers. That being said, as long as you use your head, it is a very satisfying hike with a spectacular view. The parking lot attendant recommended that we go up the White Dot trail and down the White Cross trail. That worked for us; the way down was easier in some respects. This was a great experience and I'd like to do it again and again.

I have hiked this Mountain at least 6 times and I enjoy the view going up. I know the mountain is crowded but people are friendly. This is a good day hike for everyone in the family and I have enjoyed teh children having fun during the hike. This is not a hike for those who are seeking to get away from it all. Very popular and you can see Boston in the distance on a clear day. Bring your binoculars and camera.

I once lived in Jaffrey NH and hiked Mt Monadnock. It was quite a experience. I had seen pictures of the mountain taken by a neighbor who seemed to be something of a 'guru' when it came to that place. It attracted people from all over, and here I was, so close and yet, had lived there close to a year before I decided to see it for myself. It was absolutely breathtaking. This was about 13 years ago, so I don't know how it is these days, but it didn't cost me a dime to take in the magnificent sights, and tho my body felt the strain of the climb, it wasn't something a novice hiker couldn't endure. Fall in New Hampshire is nothing short of brilliant, but include a view from the summit of this majical mountain, and you'll never forget the experience! Personally, I had a blast!!
