The Scene
Ask at the resort about the snowshoe walks, hosted by national park staff. Groups can prearrange guided walks by contacting the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center (360) 452-4501. The Hurricane Ridge road, which rises to almost 5,000 feet, is also open in winter for car touring, weather permitting. For an alternative to driving up to Hurricane Ridge, ask about local bus services that provide weekend shuttles between Christmas and mid-February.
The Slopes
Situated within Olympic National Park at a 5,230-foot elevation, Hurricane Ridge frequently experiences high winds and low temperatures. Still, snow conditions can be quite good on the bowl-shaped slope. With 665 feet of vertical and 90 percent of its terrain rated beginner-level, Hurricane Ridge can't offer much in the way of challenge. Many who come here pursue cross-country and telemark skiing, snowshoeing and sightseeing. The ski area remains open between Christmas and the end of March.
