The Background – Home to unfettered populations of bison, elk, moose and mountain goats, the park was envisioned early in the century by Dr. David and Connie Hellyer, a Tacoma couple who wished to preserve the region's indigenous species. In 1937, the two conservationists began buying land for a wildlife sanctuary.
