In Short – Fort Stevens was the primary military defense where the Columbia River empties into the Pacific Ocean for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War. Now a 3,700-acre park, it offers the only enclosed defensive earthworks on the West Coast, plus other preservation sites and attractions. The campground has a large number of campsites, some with ADA accessibility, as well as yurts. There is also river beach access, ample fishing facilities and group picnic areas.

- A great base for exploring historic Astoria, near the end of Lewis and Clark's famous journey.
My favorite campground

I have been coming to Fort Stevens for a week every year for the past 20 years, and while it has changed considerably from a bunch of closed-in, heavily forested campsites to more of an open, huge family place, it has never stopped being one of the highlights of my year. It is a perfect balance of camping, trails, beach, historical sites, privacy, and openness. The facilities are clean and maintained, the park service is attentive and informative, and when it is open the espresso stand is a great place for coffee and newspaper early in the morning. Always has been, always will be my summer destination.
- Pros: Trails, facilities, tons of site options, quiet, parking, beach and highway access
- Cons: No longer a secret
