In Short – In this museum's depictions of the trials and tribulations of a younger Washington State, mannequins talk of daily chores, Meriwether Lewis suffers incessant rain, Oregon Trail travelers leave the unfortunate behind, Native Americans succumb to disease and coal miners die in cave-ins. Witness the Great Depression, Japanese internment and World War II. Kids love the scale railroad, Ezra Meeker's oxen, the Klondike Gold Rush play spot and the mind-assaulting, 5,500-square-foot interactive History Lab Learning Center.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- Equally as good as the museum is its store crammed with toys, jewelry, Native-American art, local foods and a first-class collection of books relating to the Northwest.
- The Extras:
- On weekdays, visit the copper-domed Federal Courthouse next door. Originally home to the railroad's Union Station, it is the building on which the history museum was modeled.
- Save Money:
- Admission is free from 5pm to 8pm every Thursday.
